Born Lakenheath, registered Mildenhall Q2-1888 [4A:77]. 1891 census...Aged 3, he was living at Undley, Lakenheath with his father- Charles ASHMAN [28] a general labourer, born Mildenhall; mother- Jane (née RUTTERFORD) [25] born Lakenheath; sister- Elvina Martha [6] born Lakenheath; sister- Phoebe Jeanette [1] born Lakenheath. 1901 census...Aged 13 he was an agricultural labourer, living at Mill Road, Lakenheath with his father, mother, sister Phoebe and brother- Algie [8], born Lakenheath; brother- Athol H. [6] born Lakenheath, and sister- Elsie L [3], born Lakenheath. He married Bessie FLACK [17-7-89], registered Mildenhall Q1-1910 [4A:1349]. 1911 census...Aged 23, a farm labourer, living in Back Street, Lakenheath with his wife Bessie [20], born Lakenheath. His parents were still at Mill Road, Lakenheath with his brothers Alfee and Athol and sister Elsie, plus two new brothers, Vincent [6] and Ralph [1], both born in Lakenheath. Two siblings had died. The pension card places his widow at Undley Lodge, Lakenheath His photograph below was taken when he was playing soccer for Tuddenham Rovers FC in 1906. The 11th Suffolks transferred from 17th Corps to 3rd Corps early in July 1917, and moved from Houvin-Houvignel to the St Quentin area, the centre being 3 miles
west of the Hindenburg Line at Bellenglise. Donald was the only fatality from his battalion that week.
His death was reported in the Bury Free Press on 4th (below) and 11th (photo at heading) August 1917.

Donald was found here, a short way NW of St Quentin and re-interred on 12/9/1919 in Jeancourt
